&lt;br/&gt;Ah...next year I totally need to grow me some motherwort to support good heart health, as well as experiment with various scented geraniums (I hear the "oak" geranium smells like incense!), and some hollyhocks (an old fashioned-looking flower, I know; but I appreciate that, and they have the same uses as Marsh Mallow. And, I definitely want to try my hand at lavender, again. Ya' know, something struck me this month: Because Iowa has a really short growing season, and very harsh and COLD winters, I'm surprised that no one has (to *my* knowledge) written a book specifically about gardening in Iowa...especially if you want to grow flowers and herbs that are hardy in far more southern climate zones. Which species, then 9and precautions) would be best? How do you get them to survive and protect the perennials? For example, I've always wanted to grow honeysuckle for wine, jelly, lotions, and oils, etc. but it's hardy only up to Zone 7 which is in the deep south! Generally, it's been my experience that when folks write books or articles about gardening in the Midwest, Iowa usually seems somewhat far from their mind. In fact, it seems like such works tend to concentrate on states like Kansas or Colorado as being the definition of "Midwestern".&lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Howdy, my besom-buddies!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Well, this past Monday ('cause I wasn't about to deal with the bloody tourists!)
&lt;br/&gt;me and my mom drove all the way down to Pella [Iowa] for the afternoon a couple
&lt;br/&gt;days after the end of the Tulip Festival (missing my dog, Abby, the whole time,
&lt;br/&gt;because she had to be left at home...and, I'm such a worrier, anyway, 'cause
&lt;br/&gt;she's my baby, after all!). So, at Pella I took skags of pix., and shopped a
&lt;br/&gt;bit as well. At one store, in particular, called Funky Junque on Franklin St.
&lt;br/&gt;(in downtown across from the Verneer Windmill, on the *apposite* side of the
&lt;br/&gt;street) I found one of the coolest items, *ever*: a ceramic Cauldron with a
&lt;br/&gt;metal hanger resting atop a lovely metal tripod!!! I knew, at first sight, that
&lt;br/&gt;it *must* be mine! (Hmmm...I wonder if a Witch can actually own *too* many
&lt;br/&gt;Cauldrons?) I've simply never seen anything like it, before! I just wish that
&lt;br/&gt;I knew a method or two to clean the bit of rust from the hanging do-dad, and the
&lt;br/&gt;slight "tarnish" from off'a the tripod "thingy". As soon as I get my new PC
&lt;br/&gt;I'll definately post a couple pix. with my new find at the foreground of my
&lt;br/&gt;Altar to Morrighan. :o) It was also, here, that I found a lovely pewter vase
&lt;br/&gt;(or so I was told, anyway), of about the perfect height (because I didn't want
&lt;br/&gt;anything behind Her that took any attention away from the Holy idol of the
&lt;br/&gt;Goddess). As soon as I got home I walked to the old residence of Granny and
&lt;br/&gt;Poppy (my great grand parents on my mom's side, long-since gone) and cut several
&lt;br/&gt;boughs of lilacs to flood the vase; so, now She has a lovely spray of lilacs
&lt;br/&gt;behind Her, framing Her, and perfuming my entiure bedroom! Ah....it's simply a
&lt;br/&gt;divine fragrence. *G* Though, when my newly bought crimson red Echinacea
&lt;br/&gt;blooms, She's be surrounded by a lovely Otherworld red flowery flame!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I only spent $21 on the Cauldron/tripod, and I'm fairly certain that if I had
&lt;br/&gt;bought it anywhere else that I would have paid at least 3 times that amount.
&lt;br/&gt;Not sure what to do with it, yet, other than "looking pretty"! LOL! Right now
&lt;br/&gt;I've got a yellow pillar candle in it, in preperation for Midsummer. And,
&lt;br/&gt;hopefully my calendula will be ready to cut so that I can place it in my new
&lt;br/&gt;vase, too, for the celebration. Can you imagine how lovely She would look for
&lt;br/&gt;Midsummer with gold candles about, a spray of yellow flowers behind, and a
&lt;br/&gt;lovely yellow pillar candle at the forfront? :o) *le sigh* Though, when mom's
&lt;br/&gt;stargazer lilies are up again this year (it's their third year; in fact, they
&lt;br/&gt;have gotten so huge that many of the stalks are as big as a freaking septre!),
&lt;br/&gt;they'll look gorgious at Her altar as an offering, and will probably impart such
&lt;br/&gt;a heady fragrence that my room is bound to become pleasently nauseating. Heh
&lt;br/&gt;heh heh... Of course, I must remember to clip the stamens so they won't
&lt;br/&gt;accidentally stain Her idol! That would be an unfortunate mistake!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I also bought my Dad a chocolate eclair for his birthday (which was last Sunday)
&lt;br/&gt;from a brilliant bakery that's been around since the very early 1900s, if I
&lt;br/&gt;recall correctly: Jaarsma Bakery. An item that I bought for myself was one of
&lt;br/&gt;their Poppy Seed Almond Cream Cakes. YUM-O!!! It had the PERFCT "crumb" (as
&lt;br/&gt;chefs would say); fluffy and delectible; the perfect flavor (not too sweet...it
&lt;br/&gt;was JUST right); and it was so pale for something having been baked; there was
&lt;br/&gt;no brown coloring on the outside to even lead one to note any baking signatures!
&lt;br/&gt;It was so delicious, in fact, that I'm seriously considering asking them for the
&lt;br/&gt;recipe, if they wouldn't mind. It would be PERFECT and oh-so-appropriate for
&lt;br/&gt;the Rites of Autumn! *drool* Mom bought herself something like a cinnamon role
&lt;br/&gt;that was, she said, just like Granny used to make (she was, apparently, an
&lt;br/&gt;awesome baker): it was buttery and, like my own treat, "not too sweet".
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Hey, speaking of food, I can't wait until my lemon balm's mature so I can start
&lt;br/&gt;cooking with it! I already have two ideas in mind: lemon balm short bread
&lt;br/&gt;cookies, and white chocolate-lemon balm ice cream (if I can find me a cheap
&lt;br/&gt;electric ice cream maker!). What do you think? :o) Never thought of white
&lt;br/&gt;choc. ice cream, before. *shrugs*
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Sadly, we ran afoul a wee bit of misfortume while shopping. We went into a shoe
&lt;br/&gt;store, 'cause I've been in desperate need of some new shoes for a very long
&lt;br/&gt;time. Well, I found a nice pair of shoes that neither me or mom could think
&lt;br/&gt;cost more than $20, though I would have gone as high as $40 (max.!). Well, I
&lt;br/&gt;should have known that something was amiss, because there were absolutely NO
&lt;br/&gt;prices listed for any of their merchandice, because when we got to the register,
&lt;br/&gt;my shoes ended up costing $100!!!!!!!!! DAMN!!! I nearly had a heart-attack
&lt;br/&gt;right then and there. Now, according to someone my mom works with at the
&lt;br/&gt;nursing home, all of Pella's very common necessities are drastically over-priced
&lt;br/&gt;without any prices usually being listed, which is rather unusual for a college
&lt;br/&gt;town! Mom's co-worker told her that she needed some new socks quit badly while
&lt;br/&gt;she was visiting, and picked up a pair of the plainest and most simple socks you
&lt;br/&gt;could imagine, and found that they were $15 when she brought them up to the
&lt;br/&gt;register! Again, I should have suspected something when I noticed how fine and
&lt;br/&gt;expensive-looking even the buildings of their local gas station and McDonalds
&lt;br/&gt;were. It seems like a horribly expensive town, especially when compared to Des
&lt;br/&gt;Moines and other local cities. And here I was, meandering about, thinking what
&lt;br/&gt;a beautiful city this would be to live in, and study at, until I saw the bloody
&lt;br/&gt;cost of living. Yikes!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;At least I found some great, and inexpensive stuff, though. Funky Junk also had
&lt;br/&gt;an actual antique old Victorian apothecary bottle for sale for what seemed like
&lt;br/&gt;a reasonable price: $21. I wasn't about to buy it, though. Don't get me wrong,
&lt;br/&gt;I love items of that style. However, I wasn't about to pay that price for a
&lt;br/&gt;single bottle. Besides, I need several identicle bottles/ jars for my store of
&lt;br/&gt;herbs, extracts and tinctures, etc.; this one was simply too large; and it came
&lt;br/&gt;with a portion of an original lable from the period that I wouldn't have had the
&lt;br/&gt;heart to remove or cover up. Oh, this store also had some fabulous antique
&lt;br/&gt;toasters, too! They're the kind hat are sort of triangular-shaped and you
&lt;br/&gt;simply plop the bread into the sides of it. If I'd had more money I might have
&lt;br/&gt;bought one, regardless of mom telling me that they catch fire easily. I could
&lt;br/&gt;surely find someone to "modernize" its wiring, etc. in this regard, I'm sure.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;So, we walked around town, and as the day wore on, I got a slight sunburn
&lt;br/&gt;(pining, in retrospect, for some calendula/ marshmallow-infused vinigar, after
&lt;br/&gt;the fact), and the sun became so warm that it made me a little ill. I just
&lt;br/&gt;became extremely nauseated and queezy in the stomach. Thankfully it did not
&lt;br/&gt;cause a full blown attack of Meniere's Disease! Whew... At least I got some
&lt;br/&gt;kick ass pix. in the end. Near the end of June we're going to the Trek Fest in
&lt;br/&gt;Riverside Iowa (the future birth place of Cap. James T. Kirk of the USS
&lt;br/&gt;Enterprise). They're going all out, this year, having a huge Trekkie festwith
&lt;br/&gt;stars from the original: the actors who played Chekov, Ulhura, and Sulu (the
&lt;br/&gt;latter, you may recall, is openly Gay). Unfortunately, I found that you have to
&lt;br/&gt;buy a ticket and pay a fee to be able to get a signed autograph, or to have a
&lt;br/&gt;pic. taken with one of 'em. What a rip off! ;o)
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Okie dokie, kids, I must get back to some serious TV-watching, now. One of my
&lt;br/&gt;favorite movie's on: Snow White: A Tale of Terror. I love that mirror! The
&lt;br/&gt;medieval Germans (even to this day) have always been brilliant wood carvers.
&lt;br/&gt;And, who knew that Sigouney Weaver could sing? It's a huge leap from her most
&lt;br/&gt;famous line (it's a fav. of mine, anyway), "Get away from her you bitch!" LOL!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Take Care,
&lt;br/&gt;Wade&lt;/div&gt;

How offensive!  Why to Christians believe that they have a right to supremacey, and a monopology on civil marriage?  It's insulting!  Sadly, many Reps. simply won't listen to any voices in their districts that dont already support their own view points.&lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Cedar Rapids struggles to endure historic flood
&lt;br/&gt;By AMY LORENTZEN, Associated Press Writer 25 minutes ago
&lt;br/&gt;CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Cedar River poured over its banks here Thursday, forcing the evacuation of more than 3,000 homes, causing a railroad bridge to collapse and leaving cars underwater on downtown streets.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;ADVERTISEMENT
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Officials estimated that 100 blocks were underwater in Cedar Rapids, where several days of preparation could not hold back the rain-swollen river. Rescuers had to use boats to reach many stranded residents, and people could be seen dragging suitcases up closed highway exit ramps to escape the water.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"We're just kind of at God's mercy right now, so hopefully people that never prayed before this, it might be a good time to start," Linn County Sheriff Don Zeller said. "We're going to need a lot of prayers and people are going to need a lot of patience and understanding."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;About 3,200 homes were evacuated and some 8,000 residents displaced, officials estimated.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Days of heavy rain across the state have sent nine rivers across Iowa at or above historic flood levels. Residents were already steeling themselves for floods before storms late Wednesday and early Thursday brought up to 5 inches of rain across west central Iowa.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"We are seeing a historic hydrological event taking place with unprecedented river levels occurring," said Brian Pierce, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Davenport. "We're in uncharted territory — this is an event beyond what anybody could even imagine."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Gov. Chet Culver has declared 55 of the state's 99 counties as state disaster areas.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;No deaths or serious injuries were reported in Iowa, but one man was killed in southern Minnesota after his car plunged from a washed-out road into floodwaters. Another person was rescued from a nearby vehicle in the town of Albert Lea.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In Des Moines, officials said they were urging residents to evacuate more than 200 homes north of downtown because of concerns that the Des Moines River would top a nearby levee. Some residents also were ordered to evacuate homes along rivers in Iowa City and Coralville.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In Cedar Rapids, a city of about 124,000, flood waters downtown neared the top of stop signs and cars were nearly covered in water. It wasn't clear just how high the river had risen because a flood gauge was swept away by the swirling water.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"It's going door to door to make sure people don't need to be rescued, because right now they can't get out on their own," said Dave Koch, a spokesman for the Cedar Rapids Fire Department. "It's just too deep."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The surging river caused part of a railroad bridge and about 20 hopper cars loaded with rocks to collapse into the river. The cars had been positioned on the bridge in hopes of weighing it down against the rising water.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Joe Childers, an official at a U.S. Bank in downtown Cedar Rapids, was in jeans and tennis shoes as he worked to move documents and other items upstairs or out of the building.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"We're trying to keep water out of as many places as we can," he said. "It's pretty amazing. I don't think anyone really expected it this far."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Prisoners had to be moved from the Linn County jail, including some inmates who had been transferred from the Benton County jail in Vinton because of flooding. The sheriff's office also was under water, Zeller said.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"We've had to move our operations out of the area and to our alternate emergency site," Zeller said. "We are just trying to regroup. When you don't have all of your equipment and you don't have all your facilities to operate out of — we're at a little bit of a disadvantage ... but we're carrying on as normal."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Several emergency shelters were opened, and the city had closed all but one of its bridges over the Cedar River.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"I believe that this is God's way of doing things, and I've got insurance, so I'm not worried about it," said Tim Grimm, who was forced to leave his home in the city's Czech Village area.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In Austin, Minn., the Cedar River crested 7.4 feet above flood stage. The river went about 5 feet higher in a 2004 flood that caused major damage in the city.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"It seems like we're having the hundred-year flood every four years. It's absurd," said Mark Dulitz, who had 4 inches of water in his basement and a ring of sandbags around his house.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Some businesses and offices were closed, including a Hormel Foods corporate office and its Spam Museum, but floodwaters were already receding by Thursday afternoon. The floodwaters did claim the life of a man whose vehicle became submerged when the road washed out from under it just west of Austin.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Flooding this week also caused damage across southern Wisconsin, where thunderstorms continued pounding the area on Thursday.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Iowa County Emergency Management Director Ken Palzkill said his county saw an "unprecedented" amount of rain Thursday afternoon. He said the village of Cobb got 3 inches of rain in an hour.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The weather service issued flash flood watches for southern Wisconsin with tornado watches in central and eastern areas. Several tornadoes briefly touched down, but no injuries were reported.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Flash flooding in Grant County in the southwestern corner of Wisconsin closed two highways and required rescues, authorities said. Three homes were destroyed and others had major damage from the flooding, which reached several feet deep in spots, according to Julie Loeffelholz of Grant County Emergency Management.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Just southeast of Grand Rapids, Mich., crews pulled the body of a motorist from a car found drifting in the swollen Thornapple River. State police said they believe the 57-year-old man called on his cell phone but didn't say what happened or where he was; they found him using global positioning equipment.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;People in several northern Missouri communities, meanwhile, were piling up sandbags to prepare for flooding in the Missouri River, expected to crest over the weekend, and a more significant rise in the Mississippi River expected Wednesday.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;__
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Associated Press writers Michael J. Crumb and Melanie S. Welte in Des Moines and Patrick Condon in Austin, Minn., contributed to this report.

&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;We'll have plenty of water for him to look at, at least here in Iowa City and Coralville.  As of this moment, the flood waters are still at 29.37 feet, which is higher than the previous flooding record (set in 1993) of 28.5 feet.  Flood stage is 22 feet.  So yes indeedy, we have plenty of water for him to exclaim over.  &lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;At midday, I was helping with sandbagging in Iowa City, and everyone was talking about how great it was to have a bright, sunny day, with only 10% chance of rain.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Then, around 3:00 pm, a flash thunderstorm materialized. It was a real toadstrangler, too. It included strong wind, hail the size of my thumbnail, an inch of rain, and cloud rotation that inspired the city to sound the tornado siren.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;We really didn't need more rain.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I haven't been to Coralville since Wednesday, so I don't know how conditions are there.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;As of today, there were two bridges in the Iowa City &amp;amp; Coralville area still open - Burlington Street and I-80.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The sandbagging that I helped with was over near the Lindquist computer center and the library. The university is hoping to protect both from the rising waters. Many books have been removed from the library and taken to safety, but they're still concerned. The union is flooding. My understanding is that the university considers the sandbagging efforts to be complete.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Lots of stores along Clinton Street and Old Capitol Mall were closed this morning. There's no flood threat that high up above the river, but I think they didn't see much point in being open due to the lack of foot traffic. People aren't coming in from out of town, people generally aren't crossing the river, and the locals generally are sandbagging instead of hanging out at the downtown stores.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Another big sandbagging effort is on the south side of town - the area around Gilbert street, south of Kirkwood Avenue. The west side of Gilbert Street from Kirkwood on south is flooded. South of highway 6, the flooding has crossed Gilbert and has flooded the HyVee. Sandbagging efforts today were attempting to protect Office Depot, Car-X, and other businesses in that area. That's where my husband was helping.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I got a call today from Best Buy at the Coral Ridge Mall today reminding me that a computer I'd taken in for repair was ready.  I told the guy I knew it was done, but was waiting for the flood to ease up before coming to get it.  He got rather impatient with me, saying that bridges were open and it was perfectly fine to come to Coral Ridge.  So, parts of Coralville are doing business as usual.&lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;CEDAR RAPIDS IS the town where both sides of my family are from. I was born there.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Floodwaters swamp Iowa town; drinking water all but gone
&lt;br/&gt;By AMY LORENTZEN, Associated Press Writer 51 minutes ago
&lt;br/&gt;CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Hospital patients in wheelchairs and on stretchers were evacuated in the middle of the night as the biggest flood Cedar Rapids has ever seen swamped more than 400 blocks Friday and all but cut off the supply of clean drinking water in the city of 120,000.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;ADVERTISEMENT
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;As many as 10,000 townspeople driven from their homes by the rain-swollen Cedar River took shelter at schools and hotels or moved in with relatives.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;About 100 miles to the west, officials in Iowa's biggest city, Des Moines, urged people in low-lying areas to clear out by Friday evening. The Des Moines River was expected to crest at 8 p.m., but officials said just before the expected peak that a malfunctioning gauge may have led them to overestimate how high it would rise.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Officials became less worried that the levees would be topped, but U.S. Army Corps of Engineers spokesman Roger Less said the city of 190,000 residents would not be out of danger until Saturday.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"We have a lot of soft spots in those levees," Less said. "We are still at very high river levels even though we are starting to see some slight drops." He added: "We don't think the victory is won at this point."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The flooding was blamed for at least two deaths in Iowa: a driver was killed in an accident on a road under water, and a farmer who went out to check his property was swept away.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Since June 6, Iowa has gotten at least 8 inches of rain. That came after a wet spring that left the ground saturated. As of Friday, nine rivers were at or above historic flood levels. More thunderstorms are possible in the Cedar Rapids area over the weekend, but next week is expected to be sunny and dry.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In Cedar Rapids, the engorged river flowed freely through downtown. At least 438 city blocks were under water, and in some neighborhoods the water was 8 feet high. Hundreds of cars were submerged, with only their antennas poking up through the water. Plastic toys bobbed in front of homes.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;For decades, Cedar Rapids escaped any major, widespread flooding, even during the Midwest deluge of 1993, and many people had grown confident that rising water would pose no danger to their city. The flood this time didn't just break records; it shattered them.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The Cedar River was expected to crest Friday night at nearly 32 feet, an astonishing 12 feet higher than the old record, set in 1929.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Flooding left 2 inches of water in the emergency room at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids on Thursday night, and water spilling into the lower levels threatened to knock out the hospital's emergency generator.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;A total of 176 patients — some of them frail, about 30 of them from a nursing home at the medical center — were moved to other hospitals in an all-night operation that was not completed until daybreak.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"Those poor people. They looked half-terrified and half-thankful that they had someplace to go where they could finally rest and be cared for," said Sonya Thornton, a technician at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids, where many of the patients were taken. She was called into work at 2 a.m. to help with the evacuation.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Gov. Chet Culver declared 83 of the state's 99 counties disaster areas, a designation that helps speed aid and opens the way for loans and grants. The damage in Cedar Rapids alone was a preliminary $737 million, Fire Department spokesman Dave Koch said.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The drenching has also severely damaged the corn crop in America's No. 1 corn state and other parts of the Midwest at a time when corn prices are soaring. But officials said it was too soon to put a price tag on the damage.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;At Cedar Rapids' Prairie High School, where 150 evacuees waited, people could be seen crying in the cafeteria while others watched flood coverage on TVs set up in the gym. Tables were lined with shampoo, toothpaste, contact lens solution and other items, and piles of clothes were separated by size.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;At the school, Lisa Armstrong wept as she watched TV news footage of her own rescue. She saw herself climbing into a boat, and watched rescuers trying to coax her dog out of the house. They finally grabbed the animal and pulled it out.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"I didn't think it was going to be as bad as it was, and we should have got out when we were told to leave," she said. "I didn't think or imagine anything like that."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The shelter was the third stop for Don Webster and his family, after his mother-in-law's house and then a stepson's place. Holding his 4-year-old grandson, Leroy, he said he planned to stay for a few days, then "just pray and hope there's something when you go back."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Cedar Rapids warned people to conserve drinking water after the floodwaters knocked out electricity to all but one of the city's half-dozen or more wells. The one working well was protected by sandbags and generators that were pumping water away from it.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"If we lost that one we would be in serious trouble," Koch said. "We really need to reduce the amount of water we are using, even using paper plates, hand sanitizer."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Hotels implored guests to use water only for drinking.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The city's newspaper, The Gazette, continued to cover the story with the help of emergency generators. But the floodwaters were just outside the front door, and the place had no running water. Portable bathrooms were set up outside for the staff.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;"We're putting the paper out through heroic, historic effort by the staff companywide," said Steve Buttry, who started as editor of the newspaper on Tuesday — just one day before the disaster struck.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In Des Moines, fire officials had no immediate estimate of the number of people urged to evacuate several blocks close to the river. Mayor Frank Cownie said the evacuations were an attempt to "err on the side of citizens and residents."
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Interstate 80 was closed east of Iowa City to Davenport after the Cedar River washed over the highway. Amtrak service aboard the California Zephyr was suspended between Denver and Chicago because of flooded-out tracks.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Violent thunderstorms Thursday and Friday brought widespread flooding to Michigan's Lower Peninsula that authorities say left some roads and bridges unstable or impassable, blew roofs off buildings and downed trees and power lines.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Weary residents in waterlogged southern Wisconsin began cleaning up Friday from a new spate of storms the night before, including nine reported tornadoes and some flash floods.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;People in several northern Missouri communities, meanwhile, were piling up sandbags to prepare for flooding in the Missouri River, expected to crest over the weekend, and a more significant rise in the Mississippi River expected Wednesday.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;(This version CORRECTS that Amtrak suspension is between Denver and Chicago, not Omaha, Neb., and Chicago.)

&lt;br/&gt;and still, Nick Kaeding, hailing from Iowa City West, and the UofIowa, still takes a back seat to some dude who has 5 receptions and 75 yards as the top performer according to msn.com!!! WTF!? kickers are the first to receive the wrath for losing a big game, and last to get credit for keeping their team alive!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;so here's to Nick and Iowa! and san diego to a lesser extent.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;you can return to your espressos and ikea catologs.  maybe your hoola hoop needs some duct tape or your dog needs a perm.&lt;/div&gt;

So, the thought occurred to me: Is there some sort of a similar institution for us potential city-dwellers on the hard-streets of Des Moines? I enquired about this on another group, at one time, and was ask to contact some woman that somehow worked for the city, and she *never* responded to my query, unfortunately. Does anyone know if there is such a space for gardening for those that do not own a home, but rent an apt.? After all, I'd like to grow a huge harden of medicinal plants, such as Echinacea spp. and even poppies, etc. (that would not grow well in pots)! And, who might I contact to learn more in Des Moines, or if such a space is even extent?

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;I had never heard of this before and my brother enlightened me about the program today. Sounds interesting - I'll still be caucusing but I think I'm going to check it out too...
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;http://www.caucusofthefuture.com/
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;WHAT IT IS
&lt;br/&gt;The Caucus of the Future will take place January 2nd &amp;amp; 3rd, 2008 in Des Moines, Iowa, running concurrently with the Iowa Caucuses. Our goal is to dream up and practice the many ways we can take power out of the hands of those who claim to represent our interests, be they elected or unelected, and redistribute it to everyone through a network of free communities and neighborhoods. Through workshops, discussions and performances, the Caucus of the Future will provide a forum for exchanging alternative ideas that are based on mutual aid and cooperation. Patrons of the Caucus will share skills and resources with each other, demonstrating the many ways we can make a difference in our own lives, with or without casting a vote. We do not do this to gain control over others, but to attain control together—over how we provide each other with shelter, education, art, and information, over how we resolve conflicts, over how we share resources and ideas, over how we determine our own lives.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;It should be noted that we do not wish to dissuade folks from participating in the Iowa Caucuses–rather, we want to present a more direct approach to solving problems. The Caucus of the Future will have something for everyone, so be sure to participate! Oh, and it will also be a ridiculous amount of fun!!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;WHAT TO EXPECT
&lt;br/&gt;We will be providing participants of the event with a Caucus of the Future Guide that will list all of the speakers, workshops and performaces and the times they will be held. In addition, we will have that information on this site as things come into fruition.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Some workshops and discussions you can expect to see might include: Alternative Energy/Fuel, Sustainable Agriculture/Permaculture, Alternative Media, Direct Action, Self-Defense, Folk History, Bicycle Repair, Community Gardening, Consent, Gift Economics, Urban Exploration, Community Organizing, Alternative Education, and much more.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The Caucus of the Future will provide a festive atmosphere with free organic vegetarian food and beverages, and performances by musicians and artists.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;HOW TO PARTICIPATE
&lt;br/&gt;If you wish to participate in the Caucus of the Future [give a workshop, leading a discussion, performance, etc], head on over to the Get Involved section and fill out the form. It’s important that we have a diverse mix of workshops, skillshares and speakers so we can keep this an all inclusive event; which is to say, please participate if you can!.&lt;/div&gt;

No prior flamenco experience is required. The workshop is designed for the needs of:

&lt;br/&gt;* Belly dancers who specialize in American Tribal Style and like to use flamenco posture, hand floreos, and other techniques in their dance
&lt;br/&gt;* Belly dancers who specialize in Egyptian style who want to emulate the Andalusian-flavored pieces by Samia Gamal, Tahia Carioca, Mahmoud Reda, and others. It includes dancers who like to use music (such as El Hub Kulu) that contains Andalusian elements
&lt;br/&gt;* Flamenco dancers wishing to polish their basic technique under the guidance of a master instructor
&lt;br/&gt;* Latin dancers who wish to enhance their dance stylings with flamenco movement
&lt;br/&gt;* Ballet, modern dance, and other artists who wish to add some flamenco techniques to their repertoires
&lt;br/&gt;* Dancers of any form who wish to perform Gypsy-inspired pieces
&lt;br/&gt;* Dancers of any form who wish to use skirt work in their choreographies
&lt;br/&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;In addition to the dance workshops, the event will include a Friday evening lecture by Mariano on the history of Spanish dance, including its ties to the Gypsy trail and North Africa. There will also be a Friday evening dance party at a salsa club, and a Saturday night dance concert of professional dancers drawn from the communities of Latin and Middle Eastern dance artists.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;If you like the dance styles of Nourhan Sharif, Dalia Carella, Elena Lentini, Tamalyn Dallal, and others, then you'll appreciate this opportunity to take a workshop from a master instructor who inspired them and contributed to their skills.&lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;My friend is frantic over the loss of her beloved and essential service dog. Please help by spreading the word to anybody you know in the neighborhood of Iowa City or Grinnell.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;*** Please Cross-Post and Forward Widely ***
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;M. Shirley Chong's service dog slipped his collar and escaped while she was undergoing surgery in Iowa City Friday (August 31). Hunter is an intact male, 9-year-old Belgian Tervuren, reddish fawn in color, with a fair amount of blackening, and weighing approximately 60 lbs. His face is sprinkled with grey, and he's got a mild ear infection in his left ear, plus he's blowing his coat. For those unfamiliar with the breed, the appearance is similar to a Collie/German Shepherd cross or a long-haired German Shepherd.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;He has been sighted several times, fairly close to Shirley's parents on Rochester Court (where he was supposed to be staying), but it is possible that he will decide to travel back towards Grinnell, IA. He appears to have injured a hind paw and is using only three feet.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;A picture can be seen at http://www.shirleychong.com/camps/belgian/belgian_sun.html (scroll down). Hunter is tattooed and microchipped.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;If you see Hunter, please do not attempt to catch him -- although injured, he is still very fast, and he is frightened enough that several capture attempts have failed. Please just call 319-351-3105, and keep him in sight if possible. &lt;/div&gt;

We just bought a house (was farm property about 20 years ago, there are apple trees and a good garden on the property if this helps) and I really want to have a peach tree - or apricot or nectarine.   Do they need any special winter care?  Or other suggestions of fruit trees that do well here. Thanx!&lt;/div&gt;

    <title>Crowley's Malkuth Attributations?</title>

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Hey guys, I am hoping to formulate an anointing oil dealing with manifestation upon the physical plain, as represented by the Sephiroth, Malkuth, on the Qabalah. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here-- perhaps more knowledgible on all things Crowley than myself-- could aid me in locating Uncle Al's herbal-, E.O.-, and perfume-attributations to this respective sphere in the Qabalah [Malkuth]. Some that I have found so far are:
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;* GALANGAL: According to the Wikipedia entry for Abramelin Oil, "This oil is compounded of four substances. The basis of all is the oil of the olive. The olive is, traditionally, the gift of Minerva, the Wisdom of God, the Logos. In this are dissolved three other oils; oil of myrrh, oil of cinnamon, oil of galangal. The Myrrh is attributed to Binah, the Great Mother, who is both the understanding of the Magician and that sorrow and compassion which results from the contemplation of the Universe. The Cinnamon represents Tiphereth, the Sun -- the Son, in whom Glory and Suffering are identical. The Galangal represents both Kether and Malkuth, the First and the Last, the One and the Many, since in this Oil they are One. [...] These oils taken together represent therefore the whole Tree of Life. The ten Sephiroth are blended into the perfect gold." However, upon checking my copy of Crowley's "Magick, Book Four, Liber ABA, I could not locate this citation.
&lt;br/&gt;* POMEGRANATE: from his 777. Recently I have found a supplier for Pomegranate Absolute (or was it an oleo resin?)!
&lt;br/&gt;* DITTANY OF CRETE: Malkuth's attributed "perfume" in 777.
&lt;br/&gt;* LILY: 777's attributed "plant" to Malkuth; probably because Lilith is associated with this Sphere, according to Crowley. Hmmm...I wonder if I could find a Lily Tincture somewhere, as I do not have access to enough fresh flowers to presently yield my own.
&lt;br/&gt;* STORAX: Now, I don't know if Crowley spoecificaly attributes Malkuth with STORAX, but, he attributes it to "Earth of Earth" in his 777; after all, Malkuth is associated with the Earth.

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Hey guys, one of the key-ingredients for a Potion I want to blend-- an Employment Potion-- is Sandalwood Oil. Anywya, I only have about $15 (I'm reserving $5 for s/h) to spend on Essential Oils, plus a carrier (something happened to my bottle of sweet almost, 'cause it's no longer in my apothacarey!)-- this budget also includes the shipping fee. So, I was wondering if anyone knows of REALLY CHEAP essential oils suppliers I could do business with? The folks I usually buy oils from-- Isis Books &amp;amp; Gifts [http://www.isisbooks.Com]-- are asking for $12/dram of Sandalwood oil! So, I thought to myself, "Surely this is a drastic mark up per dram! After all, the Dryad Design idol of my beloved Morrighan that I bought from Ancient Ways for $45 is being sold at Isis for $90!!!!!!"
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Anyway, I also need some Bay (Laurel) Oil, for "winning" and "victory"...though, I've got some ground cinnamon for success, some sea salt for "money" (our word, "salary", comes from a Roman expression for salt). Though, I'd like to add at least two other fragrances, if I can: Now, I immediately thought of baybarry ('cause, "a baybery candle burned down to the socket, always puts money in the pocket!"), but...I don't want a potion that smells *too* piney and herbally, as well as woodsy! So, I may be looking for two other possible ingredients! Anyone else care to recommend anything they can think of-- particularly with some herb-lore attached-- centered around money and actual "work" or "employment" to some extent? ;o)
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Heck, on top of that I need to buy two candles (I only buy my ritual candles from SomaLuna.Com!), and at least one sheet of parchment. I just hope I can afford all this for the spell I have planned-- jeeze, it sucks not having the supplies on hand when you REQUIRE them for use!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I tried scoring a job once before without any sort of a Magickal aid, and I made a promice to myself that I'd never do it again without one!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Take Care,
&lt;br/&gt;Wade
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;PS: You know, as commonly used as Sandalwood Essential Oil is-- particularly in aromatherapy-- you'd think it's be skags cheaper than what I've seen it!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;PPS: Please, *no one* recommend AzureGreen as a source. I *refuse* to purchase oils from them, because, despite their claims to being "Essential Oils" (at their quantity and prices), they clearly only sale fragrence oils!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;PPPS: Also, if anyone's gonna' say, "Well, you might have to just bite the bullet!", don't bother responding. ;o) That's defeatist!  Besides, there's ALWAYS a choice, or an option! You just have to find it, first.&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Mahmoud Reda will return to the Iowa City area on July 27-29, 2007 to teach workshops in Egyptian dance. The event includes:
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;* Early bird arrivals: showing of the Reda movie Gharam fi al-Karnak with English subtitles on Thursday evening
&lt;br/&gt;* A hafla Friday night featuring performances by workshop attendees (some professionals, some students)
&lt;br/&gt;* Workshops during the day on Saturday and Sunday
&lt;br/&gt;* A show of entirely professional dancers on Saturday night
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The workshops will be held in an air-conditioned facility.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;For those not familiar with Mahmoud Reda, he was the founder of an entire performing art in Egypt, that of the theatrical presentation of folkloric dance. He founded Reda Troupe in 1959, starred in several movies that also featured his choreography, and became known as Egypt's greatest choreographer.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Even if you normally dance barefoot, be sure to wear either dance shoes or socks to this workshop to protect the soles of your feet and your knees. Reda's dance style involves a large amount of spins, Arabesques, and other pivoting moves, and your feet need to be able to pivot freely without sticking to the floor. &lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Ugh... Okay, today was West-Central Iowa's annual "White Pole Road Sale" [http://www.whitepoleroad.com/]-- stretching from Dexter to Adiar (encompassing both towns I grew up in: Stuart and Menlo)-- and I was OFFENDED by many of the prices that folks were charging for items that they simply wanted to get rid of (my 2nd. year in a row, too)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Consider that last year I was walking thr streets of Menlo (okay, poor choice of words; get your head out of the gutter!) and found a lovely ruby-red glass claret that I bought to hold a Protection Potion that I make. Anyway, I picked it up to get a better look at it, and didn't notice a price when, immediately, the woman sitting in a chair a few yards away barked, "That's five dollars!" I nearly gaged at the price...at a garage sale or yard sale?!?!?! WTF??? I mean, MAYBE if it had cost her $50 it *might* be worth that. However, it's clearly not an item that would have cost that! But, what conviced her to charge sucha price? Now, my mom is the Garage Sale Queen-- she'd put together enough of 'em while I was growing up!-- that even *she* was shocked by the prices people are asking for!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Now, let's fast-forward to this afternoon: I was walking the streets of Stuart when I came to a slightly larger yard sale when I saw a really good table that would have been PERFECT for use as a personal Altar to the Goddess and Old Horny! Yes, it would have beena fixer-upper, 'cause it looked rather skanky! It had some definate ware on it, and rough edges, as well as a poor paint job. Hell, the paint was hidious! You remember the original film, "The Amatty Ville Horror" when the dad went into the basement and found that creepy alcove painted a bright red color? Well, that's what color it was. I would have loved to have taken it home and stripped it, then stained it! But, they wee asking 85-fucking-dollars for it! Can you believe it? Keep in mind that it may have been built by the in-nates of the Iowa State Prison, but it was in poor condition, *and* it wasn't exactly the size of a dining room table! It was rather small, like the size of a starter family might have back in the 20s! I was soooo let down! Because of the lovely shape of the table-top I would have liked to have had a piece of glass cut and bevvled to put on top of it (to keep ax off of it!). *sigh* I seriously doubt that they paid $850 for it (at the low end). Though, that's not the worse of it!!!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Nearer the entrance was a table in great condition that was what one might have on the side of their bed-- a night stand-- and they were asking for 125-fucking-dollars!!! Can you fucking believe that shit!!! I mean, what do they think it is? Gold?!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;As I said earlier, my common sense was fucking-offended! Hell, as a consumer I was OFFENDED!!! Blood nearly shot out of my eyes! Because mom was with me, I asked her how much they ought to *reasonably* be charging for the table that I fancied, snd she said, "About $10-- no more!"
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I mean, don't these folks have a decent brain in their heads? Who do you suppose convinced them to charge SO MUCH money (especially for a fixer-upper)? Of all the nerve... I even performed a little research on-line when I got home to confirm my suspitions and found that one should NOT price somemore for more than 10-to-30 percent of what they originally purchased it for! However, what people often seem to be doing, now, is pricing a lot of their things what they might be if they were to see it for sale-- new-- on clearance sale, perhaps. But, still...
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;I WAS OFFENDED!!! And, it's not often that I am offended as a consumer, or that I have my common sensse offended, too! *grrrrr* What a pitty! And, I've been looking for a propper table to serve as an Altar to the Old Gods, too (something not TOO big, nor short like a coffee table, either!). Now, if only I'd had a job and was able to afford that price, I think I *might* have picked up that table. *sigh*
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Ugh...I just wish I knew where there might be a wealthy neighbourhood so that I could go rummaging through their NICE and EXPENSIVE things on TRASH DAY (when you get to get rid of your stuff on the road side and it'll get picked up if no one wants it!). *EG*
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;PS-- On the way back I noted that the ditches along the highway between Stuart and Menlo were FILLED with wild roses [Rosa canina]-- Iowa's state flower.&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Oh no. This worries me greatly. Because President Bush signed this Executive Directive/Order into effect and it's immediate, he now has the power to dismantle Congress - if he decides to. He has the power to lock up us normal, law abiding citizens, if we refuse to take a mandated vaccine - if he wants to. He has the power to cancel the next PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS if some 'catastrophe' occurs - say, he decides Iran does something that 'we' (HE) thinks is against our country. Plus much, much more.
&lt;br/&gt;Read the article below for details.
&lt;br/&gt;If you value your rights, you MUST take action and call, fax, &amp;amp; write your senators &amp;amp; house reps. Why???? was there no congressional review of this before it took effect? God help us.

&lt;br/&gt;President Bush, without so much as issuing a press statement, on May 9 signed a directive that granted near dictatorial powers to the office of the president in the event of a national emergency declared by the president. <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;So, we've had a number of thunderstorms here in Iowa City since last year's tornado. And none of them have made me worry about whether a tornado might be coming. In fact, I've enjoyed thunderstorms my whole life, and last year's tornado didn't change that. But when yesterday's storm came through, I found myself watching the storm alerts carefully and listening for possible sirens. I guess I'm not as fully over it as I thought!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Of course, the fact that there actually was a tornado warning in Benton county (not a real tornado, just cloud rotation) probably had something to do with my reaction. And the fact that it was a rapidly-moving storm, which tends to cause more violent weather than a slowly-meandering one. And the fact that they were forecasting nickel-size hail (though what we actually got in my part of Iowa City was much smaller).
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Anyway, the night of last year's tornado we had quarter-size hail at our place about 10-15 minutes before the tornado itself came to visit, so a forecast of nickel-size hail did concern me a bit. The bigger the hail, the more violent the winds in the upper atmosphere...
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Of course, the good news is that this storm did NOT bring us tornadoes!  But it was interesting to find out that I have some lingering anxiety that I didn't realize I had!&lt;/div&gt;

In all my growing up the competition was with Minnesota - was it prettier, better farms, better people, better education, better cities (no contest there), better weather (urrghh). Maybe that was because I was from Cedar Rapids and that part of the state was more geared north - but actually we should have been more geared toward Illinois since the trek to Chicago was common, but we never spoke about boring Illinois at all. I am wondering if other states come up in comparisions in other parts of the state. Like South Dakota for the norhtwest, or Missouri (pleeez) in the south. Wisconsin would be a strong contender I think, because both Miinesota and Wisconsin tent to be vacations spots. &lt;/div&gt;

Forward this message or your own message to anyone who you think will listen and please, please think about writing your local senator about this legislation. When I spoke with Joe Bolkcom this fall he told me that if a senator got ten letters about an issue they considered that a large amount of support.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;This is very close to my heart as my beloved midwife who recently had a brand new baby of her own is currently under investigation for practicing medicine without a license and this legislation could save her if it is passed. I would like to point out that she is not being investigated because of a birth that has gone wrong or anything similar, she is simply being harassed. I am proud that she was wonderful and brave enough to face this risk for me. While midwifery is not directly mentioned in the bill, our group intends to lobby that it be included although most people feel that the phrase “not limited to” may already protect her.We are currently in the process of forming a consumer advocacy group for homebirth and midwives in Iowa . You can learn more about that at the homebirth iowa tribe.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;If you are interested in joining the local (Iowa City area) yahoo group this is the link http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/iowa_city_area_homebirth/
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;There is also a state-wide yahoo group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/midwiferyiowa/ Please feel free to join one or both groups.

Circle will be publishing an article that I co-authored with a friend, Anna Franklin (a MS. entry, actually) in the latest issue of their magazine: http://www.circlesanctuary.org/circle/ So, when you see a copy of this issue, pick it up, would you! The only change since submission (depending upon how they may have "Edited" it) is the introductory sentence in an effort to read MUCH more professionally and smoothly. I initially submitted it for their "Pantheon" section, but they wonderfully published it under their "Nature Religions Around the World"! I should be recieving my complimentary two copies of this issue within a fortnight-- just in time for my birthday: 14, March. Hmmm...I wonder when our local Borders will carry it? But, if you can't find it there, order it directly from Ciurcle Sanctuary, or search about until you *do* find a copy! *G* Let me know what you think of it when you read it, please! Personally, I'm particularly excited to read Emma Wilby's contribution, "Shamanistic Visionary Traditions In Early Modern British Witchcraft"; in fact, I can't wait to read her academic book on the same topic (along the lines of Profs. Eva Pocs, Carlo Ginzburg, and Claude Lecauteux, etc.). Apparently, European scholars have reached this consensus to the consternation of their British peers that reject it as rubbish, and usually invent vapid "reasons" for doing so, too (for example, by claiming that one cannot use any term with the root-word "shaman" in it, such as "shamanistic" as an "understood", unless they are *specifically* applying it to the tribal peoples of Siberia and the Arctic north). Apparently, Emma Wilby (an Independant Scholar that was published by Sutton, an academic publisher) has been explaining how untennible the British position is. Be hat as it may, some luminaries, such as Ronald Hutton, vehemently rejects it, and to modern Pagans, "if Hutton says it, it's so (end of story)!" So much for free-thinking Pagans, eh? Hell, just to get his scholastic-way, Hutton has actually, and blatantly, mischaractreized the writings of Prof. Carlo Ginzburg, to make them sound as though they really cannot be brought up as evidence for pagan survivalism or shamanic antecedants in witchcraft belief, as though Carlo's books say something contrary to what they actually do! I'd like to know how he can get away with this, and not be pounced on by his academic peers! Poor Carlo was also similarly mischaracterized, as he informs us, by two other British scholars, namely Norman Cohn (who lied about Margaret Murray and got away with it) and JB Russell.

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Hey guys, guess what? I was flipping through the latest AzureGreen catalogue (I rarely buy from them anymore unless I see something entirely unique), and I've found something that would make a breathless addition to any Altar devoted to the Horned One!!! It's an "Athame" (though, due to its lack of a black handle, I'd simply term it a "ritual blade") with a cloven-hooved handle!!! In fact, it reminds me of the one Doreen Valiente used to own, if I am not mistaken (hmmm...maybe it was the Farrars?)! Gods, I wish I had more money, so I could buy it! :o) Being jaded, it takes quite a bit to impress me anymore, but this sure as Avalon did the trick! Here's the link: http://www.azuregreen.com/index.html?stocknumber=RA413D So, if you have a love for Old Horny like me, perhaps you might like to purchase such a ritual blade-- it even has a Stag-Motif!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Now, if only their supplier of new Greco-Roman idolotry would carry an image of Pan! According to the owner of a local occult shop, who deals directly with the manufacturer of these same idols, they don't offer a Pan statue. But, she's written them a letter and proposed that they should! I should have asked her for the name of the company, so I could do the same thing! (Anyone, by chance, know the supplier? They look almost like marble, or perhaps even porcelain or alabaster.) Apparently, these images (and the Gods are posatively hunky, though, they cover up all the good bits with fig-leaves!) are inspired from Renaissance paintings of the Gods in question. Heck, were I a servent of Ares, I would have sooooo totally bought His idol! *drool* Heh heh heh... Though, I don't see that AzureGreen offers Him, there's a pretty arrousing image of Dionysos (incidentally, Priests dressed as Satyrs apparently had an endemic ritual role in both He and Pan's respective cults! Fascinating, no?). I've simply never seen a Pan statue that I like, but...if He looks as hunky as the idols I saw at Ancient Ways, I'd buy Him in a HEART-BEAT!!! He'd HAVE to be phallic, however-- anything else would simply be insulting!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Later,
&lt;br/&gt;Wade&lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Some folks in Iowa City are organizing an "Iowa City Dance Festival" to be held April 12-15. It's in the early planning stages at this point - the kickoff meeting was this past Wednesday night.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;There is talk of renaming it to "Iowa Dance Festival" because there is talk of having some events in other communities (for example, at CSPS in Cedar Rapids). If there are people outside of Iowa City who want to organize events in their own communities under the umbrella (and have those events listed on the schedule of activities), there's an option to do that.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;At this point, the Iowa City organizers are looking for a variety of volunteers. Any skills you have that could be used would be welcomed. Some examples (but we're not limited to these) include:
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;* Helping set up and tear down for shows
&lt;br/&gt;* Translating between Spanish/English on behalf of guest artists from Spain who are being brought to town to teach workshops and do performances
&lt;br/&gt;* Recruiting restaurants to donate meals for the Spanish guest artists
&lt;br/&gt;* Recruiting retail shops to put dance-related displays of their merchandise in their windows during the week
&lt;br/&gt;* Recruiting places with dance floors (bars, restaurants, etc.) to feature performances or social dance during the week
&lt;br/&gt;* Artists to create logos and promotional flyers/posters
&lt;br/&gt;* People with marketing skills to help get the word out
&lt;br/&gt;* People with business or finance skills to help create budgets and provide fiscal guidance
&lt;br/&gt;* Dancers of any style to teach workshops or do performances
&lt;br/&gt;* People with webmaster skills to create promotional web site that lists events
&lt;br/&gt;* Project management skills to help coordinate all this stuff
&lt;br/&gt;* Fundraising (to pay for rental of venues for performances and cost of bringing guest artists in from Spain)
&lt;br/&gt;* Organizing schedules of workshops and performances
&lt;br/&gt;* Anything else you would be willing to do that would help the cause
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Again, these are just starter ideas - if you have an idea on a way that you could help that I haven't listed, the organizers would still welcome your participation!
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The email address for contacting the organizers if you would like to volunteer your skills to the event is iowadancefest@aol.com&lt;/div&gt;

    <summary type="html">&lt;div&gt;Hey, have you guys ever noticed in any New Age-type shops colored incense (usually as joss sticks) for sale? Green is usually denoted as Money Incense. There's one such store located just under the stairs on the lower level of Merle Hey Mall! I tried contacting the manager toi learn who their incense supplier was, to see what method they used to make brightly coloured incense, and recieved no responce from this store. *sigh*
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Anyway, I believe I've finally found out how they do it! Though, I'd like to contact such a supplier of incense to be sure! However, I believe that coloured powdered incense is created by using a vegitable dye to colour talcum powder! Does anyone, perhaps, know more about this? Can you varify my thesis, or if not, direct me into a direction for answers, perhaps?
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;Hmmm...if I am right, how would one make a black base-powder in such a way? One would probably only get a very dark grey colour, even if a black colouring were used to "dye" the powder.
&lt;br/&gt;
&lt;br/&gt;The reason I am searching this, is because I often seen coloured incenses in powdered form (as though essential oils, for example, were simple added to a coloured powder), but I have *NEVER* read of sucha technique in any incense-making book before. And, the authors of those books I've been able to contact haven't a clue, either. Be that as it may, it's still chiefly practiced by many (and those few I have contacted have refused to explain how base-powders are made), and I would love to add this proceedure to my knowledge "base". ;o) Any ideas?
&lt;br/&gt;
